September 2010 Newsletter

Dear Lyn Knoll Families,

I would like to welcome back all of the returning families and welcome all of our new families to Lyn Knoll.  We are excited about this year as we have some new staff members and returning staff members teaching at a new grade level.  In Kindergarten we have Mrs. Madory Johnson, Ms. Marcus, and Mrs. Deitemeyer. First grade teachers are Mrs. Whatmore (Denny) and Ms. Miles. Second grade teachers are Mrs. Doyle and Ms. Moshos. Third grade we have Ms. Thomson and Ms. Lim. Our fourth grade teachers are Ms. Wallace and Mrs. Kusek.  Teaching our 5^th graders this year are Ms. Wilson, Mrs. Torres and Mrs. Whitaker (Martin). Mrs. Davidson has moved to our Instructional Resource Center and will be working with all of our students in technology and checking out books. We also have Mrs. Kboudi who will be working with small groups of students in reading during the afternoon.  Mrs. Treese has joined the staff as our school math teacher leader this year. Working with Mrs. Himelstieb is Ms. Woodring.

Another change that we have implemented this year is two bells at the beginning of the day.  We wanted to make the most of every instructional minute during the day. So to do this, instruction BEGINS at 8:15 a.m. so we have the first bell at 8:10 a.m. At this time students are taken into the classroom and getting ready for the day. The second bell at 8:15 a.m. signals the beginning of instruction. All students should be in the classroom at 8:15 a.m. or they will be considered tardy. During the month of August the number of students that have been tardy has decreased significantly.

I have noticed that many students are arriving at school well before the appropriate time. No student should be on school grounds until 7:40 a.m. There is no supervision provided until 7:45 a.m. This year no student will be allowed in the building before 7:40 a.m. even on cold and wet mornings. This is for the safety of the students because we have no supervision prior to that time.

Many of you might have had your child come home talking about getting a F.I.R.E. ticket. This is a good thing. We have been catching many of our Lyn Knoll Dragons being Friendly, having Integrity, being Responsible and being Engaged (F.I.R.E.). When they receive a F.I.R.E. ticket they bring it to the office and sign in. We then take the ticket and display it on the bulletin board right outside the cafeteria. Please make a point of coming in and seeing all the students that have received a F.I.R.E. ticket and locate your child’s ticket.

This year at Lyn Knoll we will not be taking instructional time for birthday treats. Classrooms will have opportunities throughout the year to have treats brought to the room.   There are many students and families that can’t afford treats for the entire classroom and their child then feels left out of being able to celebrate their birthday. In addition to the fact that our school is on corrective action for not making AYP, or enough progress on the CSASP tests, therefore, we really need to make every minute count. If every student in a classroom of 25 came the last 30 minutes of the day to hand out cupcakes, there would be a total of ten hours and 15 minutes taken away. That is more than one full day of instruction lost due to birthday celebrations. This would be in addition to the other “celebrations” we have – winter, Valentine’s Day and the end of the year. Please respect the time the teacher has to get the curriculum presented to the students.

The cost for breakfast and lunch is as follows:

Breakfast = $.85         Reduced Breakfast = Free

Lunch = $1.75             Reduced Lunch = $.40

Milk = $.65

Our computerized system does not permit charging, so please keep

your child’s lunch account current.  We stamp each child’s hand when

they only have one lunch left and again when they have used their last lunch credit.

Holiday Parties

This year we will celebrate three holidays:  Winter, Valentine’s Day

and End of Year.  If your child cannot participate in these celebrations,

please inform his/her teacher and some other activity will be provided for them.

1^st Quarter Conferences

Starting this year we will be doing our 1^st Quarter Conferencing in the Fall, September 16 and 23 at 3:45-7:45 p.m.   If your child’s teacher needs to meet with you, a conference form will be sent home to set up a time.  There will be no school on Friday, September 17, 2010.

Bicycles

The Aurora Public School District supports the Aurora Police Department

guidelines on children riding bikes.  Bike riding is permitted for students

in grades 4 and 5.  Bikes are to be locked in the racks provided.  Please

note that the security of bicycles is not the responsibility of the school.

Supervision of each child’s conduct on bicycles is the responsibility of

the parent.  No other student driven wheeled vehicles (scooters,

skateboard, etc.) are permitted at Lyn Knoll.

Visiting School

Aurora Public School District Policy states:  All visitors must check in at the main office upon entering the school.  Entrance and exit doors are locked at all times.  Parents are encouraged to visit their child’s classroom throughout the year.  Arrangements are to be made in advance with the child’s teacher.  Short well-planned visits provide a better understanding of the child’s school experience than long, unscheduled visits.  An adult must accompany all children not enrolled at the school at all times.

Hearing and Vision Screenings

Each year at Lyn Knoll we do a vision and hearing test

on each child.  This year our vision screenings will be

on September 10^th and our hearing screenings will be

on October 8^th.  It is important that your student attend

school on those days.

Appropriate Clothing

Please remember to dress your children appropriately.  Clothing needs to cover the body adequately.  Thin straps, (spaghetti straps) halter or tube type tops, tank tops, underwear type shirts, etc. are not allowed.  Tops must be long enough so that neither skin nor navel shows.  Short shorts, sports caps, scarves, bandanas or “do rags” may not be worn and any clothing with suggestive, offensive or violent language or pictures will not be allowed.

Free Reading, Writing, Math GED Prep

Improve your basic skills or prepare for the GED in English while learning how to help your child in school!

Lyn Knoll Students Will Participate in “Pinwheels for Peace” Project

Lyn Knoll Dragons will participate in their first year of making a pinwheel art installation. This installation is based on a worldwide project called “Pinwheels for Peace”.  On September 21, 2010, International Peace Day, every student at Lyn Knoll, from grades K-5 will display their pinwheels.  The objective is to give kids the understanding that respecting the differences of people around the world and promoting peace in everyone’s lives, can make their world a better place.  Creating peace starts here at school and involves many characteristics such as; being responsible, honest, caring, being a hard worker, trustworthy, respectful, being helpful and believing in yourself.

“Pinwheels for Peace” was started by two art teachers in Florida.  They felt it was important for students to express their thoughts and ideas of what peace means. By creating a pinwheel – a material object that reminds us of a time when things were simple, peaceful, and just makes us HAPPY.  It was started on September 21, 2005.  They estimated that 500,000 pinwheels were made in over 1,350 locations throughout the world and on September 21, 2009, approximately 3 million pinwheels were made in over 3,500 locations around the world.   Lyn Knoll students will be proud to be part of this great event.  The dragons are on FIRE!

Fiestas

Este año celebraremos 3 fiestas:  Invierno, Día de San Valentín, y el Fin del Ciclo

Escolar. Si su hijo no puede participar en estas fiestas, por favor avísele a su

maestra(o) para que se le de alguna actividad alterna durante este tiempo.

Reuniones ILP

A partir de este año tendremos   las reuniones ILP en el Otoño, septiembre 16 y 23 de 3:45-7:45 p.m.. Si la maestra(o) de su hijo necesita reunirse con usted, se le enviara una forma para llenar donde usted debe marcar que horario puede venir.

No habrá clases el día viernes, 17 de septiembre, 2010.

Bicicletas

El Distrito de las Escuelas Publicas de Aurora  apoya al Departamento de Policía de

la ciudad de Aurora con las guías de seguridad que deben seguir los estudiantes que

van a la escuela en bicicleta. Se permite únicamente a los alumnos de 4to y 5º grado traer su

bicicleta a la escuela. Las bicicletas tiene que estar aseguradas en los lugares

asignados para las bicicletas. La seguridad de las bicicletas no es responsabilidad de la escuela. Los Padres son los responsable de cuidar la conducta de sus hijos cuando estén paseando en bicicleta. En Lyn Knoll no se permite a ningún estudiante andar en patines, patineta o vehículos con llantas.

Visitas a la Escuela

La Póliza del Distrito Escolar de Aurora establece lo siguiente: Todos los visitantes deben registrarse en la oficina de la escuela al entrar al plantel escolar. La entrada Principal y las puertas de salida están cerradas con llave en todo momento. Se les invita a los padres visitar a sus hijos en su salón de clase durante el ciclo escolar. Se deben hacer los arreglos necesarios con la maestra (o) antes de su visita. Las visitas cortas y bien planeadas proveen un mejor entendimiento para los alumnos que una visita larga y sin antes haber avisado. Un adulto debe acompañar en todo momento a cualquier niño que no este inscrito en la escuela.

Exámenes de el Oído y de la Vista

Cada año hacemos exámenes del oído y de la vista a todos los estudiantes. Este año tendremos los exámenes de la vista el día 10 de septiembre y los exámenes del oído el día 8 de octubre. Es muy importante que sus hijos asistan a la escuela en estos días.

Ropa Apropiada

Por favor de mandar a la escuela a sus hijos vestidos apropiadamente. La ropa tiene que cubrir el cuerpo adecuadamente. Tirantes (delgados) blusas entubadas o sin espalda, camisetas de dormir, etc. no son permitidas en la escuela. Las blusas o camisetas deben cubrir lo suficiente y no muestren el ombligo. Shorts cortos, gorras deportivas, bufandas, bandanas, ropa que tenga fotos, lenguage ofencivo o violento no son permitidos en la escuela.

Los Estudiantes de Lyn Knoll  Estaran Participando en un Proyecto Llamado “Pinwheels for Peace”

Los Dragones de Lyn Knoll participaran por primera vez elaborando una instalación de rehiletes (molinillos de viento).

La instalación está basada en un proyecto mundial llamado “Pinwheels for Peace” (Rehiletes por la Paz)

El 21 de septiembre, 2010, es el Día Internacional de la Paz, cada estudiante de Lyn Knoll, en los grados de Kinder -Quinto grado estarán exhibiendo sus rehiletes. El objetivo es que los estudiantes comprendan  que respetando las diferencias de las personas alrededor del mundo y promoviendo  la paz en la vida de todos, puede hacer al mundo un lugar mejor.

La creación de la paz comienza aquí en la escuela e involucra numerosas características tales como; ser responsable, honesto, cuidadoso,  trabajador, confiable, respetuoso, acomedido y creer en sí mismo.

“Pinwheels for Peace”  lo comenzaron 2 maestros de Florida. Ellos pensaron que era importante que los estudiantes pudieran expresar sus pensamientos y sus ideas acerca del significado de la paz. Creando un rehilete (molinillo) un objeto que  nos hace recordar el tiempo cuando las cosas eran simples, pacificas y esto nos hace feliz.

Esto comenzó el 21 de septiembre, 2005. Ellos estimaron que 500,000 rehiletes fueran elaborados en 1,350 lugares alrededor del mundo y en septiembre 21, 2009, se elaboraron aproximadamente 3 millones de rehiletes en más de 3,500 lugares alrededor del mundo. Los estudiantes de Lyn Knoll se sentirán orgullosos de formar parte de este evento. Los dragones están ardiendo.
